Character: Son Gohan
Age: 11

Background: http://dragonball.wikia.com/wiki/Gohan
Personality: Like Goku, Gohan has a pure heart. He never expresses hatred toward anybody (except while in Super Saiyan 2 state, but more on that later), is always willing to help a person in need, and his desires are all altruistic in nature. As a testament to his purity, he's one of the few people capable of riding the Flying Nimbus, which only lets the pure of heart ride it.
Also like Goku, Gohan is naive when it comes to the world at large. Growing up among martial artists capable of such feats as destroying entire planets or moving too quickly for the average human eye to see, Gohan tends to forget that normal people can't, say, jump fifty feet into the air. He's also not familiar with culture in the world at large, such as when it comes to sports. When Gohan goes to high school seven years down the road, he doesn't know the first thing about baseball, for instance. At one point he takes a pitch straight to the face because he's not sure what to do with it.
Despite the similarities, Gohan is unlike his father in two key ways. First of all, Gohan is far from being book dumb. Quite the opposite, in fact -- he's very intelligent. Chi-chi had pushed from Gohan's birth to have the boy grow up to be a scholar, and Gohan does in fact eventually take that path. At the age of 11, he's already made considerable progress, displaying exceptionally high scores in math and the sciences. Gohan, however, doesn't like studying, and has the tendency to skip on occasion. And when your son is strong enough to bench press entire planets and can fly at will, what can a mother possibly do to counter?
The other way in which Gohan differs from his father is far more vast. Despite being half-Saiyan, Gohan utterly detests fighting. He always has, ever since he was very young, though that tended to manifest itself through fear. The best example of Gohan's hatred of battle is in his fight against Cell. Gohan tries to get Cell to stand down by talking to him, mainly about Gohan's hidden powers. Needless to say, it didn't work, but the entire time Gohan wouldn't raise a hand to attack Cell. And this is against a being whose sole purpose is to destroy. This even brings itself to bear a little later, when Piccolo calls out Goku for letting Gohan tag in and even allowing Cell to heal himself before the fight -- Goku was relying far too much on Gohan having similar fighting instincts as himself, without it ever occurring to him that it could be totally different for the boy.
Despite this, Gohan continues to train his body and would rather be a warrior like his father than a scholar. This is because Gohan is fiercely protective about his friends and family, and would prefer to be proactive in keeping them safe. Gohan fights not because he wants to, but because, in his mind, he has to.
And speaking of his protectiveness of his friends? They're also his big berserk button. If you attack and critically wound anyone Gohan cares about -- especially Goku, Piccolo, or Krillin -- when Gohan is in the vicinity, prepare to come within an inch of your life, because Gohan will tap into his hidden powers, and he will unleash them on you at full blast.
Oh, yeah, and one more thing. When Gohan goes Super Saiyan 2, his personality -- in particular, his attitude toward fighting -- changes drastically. No longer is he the boy who wouldn't hurt a fly if he could help it. In his place is an enraged, powerful demon who has no problem dragging a fight out to maximize his foe's suffering. This trait, in fact, is what indirectly leads to Goku's second death -- if Gohan hadn't toyed with Cell like a cat playing with a mouse, Cell would never have gotten the chance to activate his self-destruct sequence, and Goku never would have had to warp both Cell and himself to the afterlife to save the Earth from destruction.
Abilities: Hoo boy.
Ki-based martial arts - Through training under Piccolo, Krillin, and Goku, Gohan has learned how to fight using his body's energy. This allows him to amplify the strength of his physical attacks, and to shoot it out in blasts, as well as fly. He can also suppress his ki to avoid detection. At Gohan's level of strength, he could reduce an entire planet to nothing more than a cloud of rubble (at least in his own world.)
Ki detection - Due to his training, Gohan is able to detect the energy of other people. This gives him their location and their strength, unless they're also concealing power. Then he can only make a rough estimate. Also worth noting is that he cannot detect the power levels of inorganic entities, such as androids.
Saiyan blood - Gohan is half Saiyan. At this point, though, he lacks a tail, so the only applicable Saiyan trait he possesses is his recovery ability. When a Saiyan is beaten to the point of near-death, he'll be stronger upon a full recovery than he was before he was beaten.
Hidden power - Gohan is gifted with tremendous hidden potential. It's usually awakened whenever he's thrown into a situation where not using it will kill him, or when someone he cares about is hurt. This causes his power to swell to insane levels, and he typically ends up going berserk.
Super Saiyan - This is a legendary physical state for Saiyans. Upon reaching a certain level of power, and presented with a catalyst (usually a need or a powerful emotion), a Saiyan will break the threshold and become a Super Saiyan. This state is distinguishable from a Saiyan's normal state by the golden, spiky hair, teal eyes, and golden aura a Super Saiyan emits. A Super Saiyan is at least an order of magnitude stronger than a Saiyan in his normal state, and Super Saiyans can also train to become stronger.
Super Saiyan 2 - The next stage for a Super Saiyan. It's distinguishable from the first stage by the hair standing straight up (save for a single lock of hair that falls over the forehead) and an aura that generates electricity. The Super Saiyan 2 form is at least an order of magnitude stronger than the warrior's Super Saiyan form; however, in this state, emotions can magnify enough to affect the personality. Gohan, for example, is normally a kindhearted boy who hates making other beings hurt, but in this state, he can become cruel and merciless, as he showed by toying with Cell instead of killing him outright.
Flying Nimbus - Originally belonging to his father, it was passed down to Gohan upon Goku's death. The Nimbus will respond to the call of its owner, no matter where said owner might be, and will permit people to ride it -- but only if their hearts are pure. Its maximum speed is Mach 2.
